Falling Stars

According to Chuvash traditional beliefs, all the souls and saints of unborn children reside in the heavens. When a child is born, she is met by the goddess ÐŸÃ¿Ð»Ä•хçĕ. She writes the child's destiny on her forehead, and hangs a star in her name in the sky. There was a belief, that when this person dies, her name-star falls with her. This is why, in Chuvashia, when you see a falling star, you say "МоÑ звезда на небе!" - "My star is still in the heavens!"

Stars fall so silently,
Just watch, don't make a sound.
No, "My star is in the sky!"
I hear that so often at night.
Such a familiar exclamation of joy,
that since childhood has warmed my heart.
Who was the first to cry out,
that his star still burns brightly?
It's a great love of life,
and a burning passion
that power the heart of a man
underneath his distant star.
Whatever happens in this world,
may there always be this among our people,
I will say, until the end of time,
May my star, always shine!
Peter Huzangai,
Poet of Chuvashia

Stars are very important to the Chuvash culture, on the national flag there are three suns that represent the sun of the morning, of the day, and of the evening. In ancient times, Chuvash mythology tells of a time when the earth was covered and heated by three suns. There was no night, no darkness, and no cold in Chuvashia, and evil forces couldn't touch you. It was eternally Spring. The sun, that shone the hardest, broke into thousands of small pieces and became the stars. The second sun, became the moon. They lost power and couldn't shine as brightly, so now we have in Chuvashia dark nights, and cold winters. Yellow, the color of the sun, is the color of beauty in Chuvashia. In contrast, red is the most beautiful color for Russians.

Here is some artwork by a Chuvash artist, Владимир Галошев, depicting Chuvash and their stars.
